UNITED WAY ANNUAL MEETING

The United Way of St. Clair County held its Annual Meeting on April 22, 2008 celebrating 82 years of service to our community. Over 150 people attended the event held at the Thomas Edison Inn.
Joe Salas, Campaign Chair for 2007 presented awards to over 100 corporations and businesses. He acknowledged that the Campaign, during these difficult economic times, has become a year round activity; with many special events taking place at times other than the traditional fall period. Salas presented the prestigious Chairman’s Award to Cargill Inc. who’s campaign increased over $42,237 this year. He explained that Cargill’s campaign has increased every year for the last six years and this recognition is acknowledgement of their exemplary corporate citizenship.
Salas finished the evening’s recognitions with an enthusiastic announcement that with all the special events and year round activity the Campaign had raised $1,608,000. He thanked the Campaign team and all the donors for their time and generosity.
Tim Lubbers, United Way Board President recognized Salas for his Leadership and dedication and reflected on united way achievements during his tenure which include: the new low-income dental clinic for those who have medicaid or are uninsured; creating the united way endowment fund through the community foundation; and the appointment of four new board members: Tracy Stablein-Brooks of the Michigan Education Association, Joe Dams of DTE Energy Utility Workers 223, Larry Smith, Vice-President/General Manager of Radio First, and Kevin Totty of Connections in Memphis.
The Thomas D. Melms Chief Professional Officer Award was presented by Rick Garcia, Executive Director to Jim Fortushniak, Director of The Arc of St. Clair County for his outstanding advocacy for people with mental disabilities and indigent members of our community.
Garcia acknowledged the support of partner agencies, community and board leaders for their role in supporting United Way both voluntarily and financially. Garcia gave the Tourchbearer Award, recognizing outstanding volunteer leadership to Lonnie Stevens, former Executive Director of the United Way, for her outstanding efforts in creating the dental clinic. Bob Koppel, general contaractor, was also recognized for his superior construction of the clinic which is on time and under budget.
Roy Klecha, CEO of Seaway Community Bank, was handed the gavel by lubbers to welcome him as the 2008-2010 Board President. Klecha concluded the meeting by announcing this year’s 2008 Campaign Chairperson – Mary Berckley, Regional Vice President of Fifth Third Bank.
